iVDR Mini
What is iVDR?
"iVDR " stands for
Information Versatile Disk
for Removable usage. Two specifications have been set for iVDR, one for the cartridge type designed with consideration for portability and the other for the built-in type which is mounted inside equipment.
- The cartridge type realizes ubiquitous applications with transferring of content made possible between equipment in homes, on vehicles, or in portable equipment.
- The built-in type enables increasing the capacity of built-in hard disks of digital TVs or hard disk recorders easily.
- Both types while being removable, enable large capacity recording and high speed random access which are possible only with hard disk drives.
- Interface is based on Serial ATA and copes with a high speed transfer rate of 1.5 Gbps.
- By using a multiple number of units, the user may easily build up even servers that possess Tera-Byte capacity.
- For protection of contents of videos, audios, etc., SAFIA*1 (Security Architecture for Intelligent Attachment) is used. iVDRs mounting this SAFIA are called iVDR-Secure.
Especially, iVDR-Secure aims to become a standard media for the realization of an ubiquitous society which processes copyright content of image, music and programs etc. in common over a wide field of AV equipment and PCs including home appliances, mobile equipment, and vehicle mounted equipment.
*1 SAFIA
This is a content protection technology for digital TVs, digital audio, etc. offered by SAFIA License Group. (http://www.safia-lb.com).
The technology is acknowledged by the Association for Promotion of Digital Broadcasting (D-pa) and the Association for Promotion of Satellite Broadcasting (BPA) as a "Content protection method for removable recording media, mountable on receiving equipment," and is reflected in the technical report TR-B14 and TR-B15 of the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB).
For development or commercializing of iVDR-Secure related equipment, it is necessary to conclude a separate contract with SAFIA License Group and receive SAFIA related specifications.
Outline of the iVDR Specification
The iVDRs are classified into a cartridge type and a built-in type. Specifications for the outer shape, connector shape, and interface specifications (signals, electrical characteristics, command set) have been established.
- iVDR cartridge type
The iVDR cartridge type have iVDR, iVDR Mini, and iVDR Micro, depending on their sizes, and both iVDR without SAFIA and iVDR-Secure with SAFIA are defined.
- iVDR built-in type
This type does not have a sheath case like the cartridge type and has been designed mainly for application inside equipment while retaining removable characteristics. The iVDR-Secure Built-in Series mounting SAFIA consists of three different size hard disks. This iVDR-Secure Built-in Series may realize substantial increase in built-in hard disk capacity of digital TVs or hard disk recorders and enable easy maintenance on the after sales market.
- The overall image of the iVDR specifications
The outline of the entire image of the physical layer, interface layer, file system layer and application format layer of the iVDR specifications is shown. When all layers from the physical layer to the applicable layer are mounted, mutual operation between digital TVs or Audio equipment becomes possible.
